Obama presents the bill

Obama presents the bill! The Americans are still in Iraq and Afghanistan, Guantanamo will stay open for another year, the decisions dealing with the economic crisis are in the pipeline, but the decision relative to life was made immediately. Already late at night on January 21 the White House website reiterated the administration’s commitment to support an expansion of abortion, the legal recognition of same sex unions, and research on the stem cells of embryos. The American president has promised to abolish the Mexico City policy, sustain the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, and sign the Freedom of Choice Act immediately after its approval by Congress.

Dating back to the Reagan administration and brought back to the forefront of American policy by President Bush, the Mexico City policy prohibited the federal financing of organizations commited to the spread of abortion, albeit under the vestiges of “reproductive health” or demographic planning. Obama rescinded that ‘policy’ on 23 January.

The Freedom of Choice Act finances abortion, abolishes the ban on partial birth abortion, removes any legal standing from state legislation protecting women and unborn babies, and eliminates the conscience clause for health care personnel.

This Act is the main concern of all those people who took part in the pro-life march held in Washington, D. C. a few days ago on the 36th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision. On that same day, the Boston Globe published a statement made by Obama in which he confirmed his respect for that court decision.

Obama, said the black pastor Luke Robinson, did call for change, but, “we do need change, Mr. President, because 4,000 babies die each day due to abortions. Every day, Mr. President, persons of your and my ethnic group die in large numbers. Abortion is the number one killer of African Americans in this country”.

Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee said: “Many people in Africa expected Obama to give them good news. Many of them will be surprised to learn that the first thing he is sending to Africa are surrogates of American funds to promote the abortion of their unborn babies”.

Last November Cardinal Stafford was quite clear in saying: “If Obama, Biden and the new Congress are determined to enact the anti-life agenda they announced during the election campaign, I foresee that the next few years will create the greatest divisions in the history of this nation”.
